Weekly update 3/4/25

Happy March, Everybody….we’re inching closer to more tolerable weather and the sunshine re-invigorates us. Last week was extremely busy and productive. It was food distribution week for the Military Food Pantry.

On Wednesday we packed the 40 deliveries. On Thursday we had the drivers pick up the deliveries early in the morning and then later 49 veterans shopped and selected their groceries. That’s a total of 89 veterans helped.

We need a north shore delivery person for later this month, delivery date March 27th. Please contact Kathy.

Another success story was Stacy Berthelon’s Mardi Gras Bingo event held on Sunday. Stacy reports that the Mardi Gras Bingo was a fun-filled afternoon and everyone had a great time. Stacy and all of us at SIGC thank all who came and made our first event at The Hub a huge success.

Tonight the Seniors’ Sub-Committee is meeting at Evelyn’s to discuss our next quarterly Seniors’ event. Stay tuned. Damaris and Tamara have been in touch to plan our next birthday party at the Berry Homes. This past weekend, we had four big couches delivered to the Berry Homes (donated by Ev’s friend and delivered by U-Haul).

Don’t forget about Kathy Barzal’s “mini fundraiser,” “Let’s Make a Vision Board” event at The Hub this coming Friday at 7:00-10:00 p.m. There is still time to register (see flyer attached).

I love this story – I speak once a week to Julia in Slovakia. Julia is our friends’ 13-year old daughter and we are working on her English skills. We have been having our little half hour “lessons” for several months and I asked her if they celebrate Valentine’s Day (or as Julia says, “Walentine’s Day”). I told her how when we were young, we dropped Valentine’s cards in bags taped to our classmates’ chairs. Julia took that idea and asked her classmates to create some artsy cards for the day. Then last week, I had another thought. I told Julia that we have been sending boots, long underwear, t-shirts, etc. to Mike’s cousin in Ukraine for distribution to men on the front line of fighting and to those hospitalized with injuries from the war. Well, Julia took that information to her class and they are now making greeting cards (they can write them in Slovak and/or Ukrainian) to be sent to Mike’s cousin for distribution. So, Linda, your greeting cards ideas have gone international!

Thinking of our homeless population, especially in the brutal cold, I had another small idea to relay to Bob Sweeney (our team leader for the homeless). I thought of belly bags for Bob to distribute so these people can carry something right on their body without losing it. We can maybe have a special “Bring Along” and put chap sticks, Kleenex, toothbrushes/toothpaste in a belly bag.

Our next monthly meeting is Thursday, March 20 (First Day of Spring) and on Friday, March 21, will be our Ribbon Cutting at The Hub. Clear your social calendars.
